Prince Language - Mystery Warmth

“I wanted to evoke hazy memories and a lazy sense of anticipation. The consciousness that something good is gonna happen, in time. These seem to be common feelings in a lot of my favorite new tracks. And they take their sweet time getting there - sort of a slow dance, if you will.” Add Prince Language on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/princelanguage

39. The Best of Huw - New Year Edition: Issue 27

The Best of Huw - New Year Edition: Issue 27

The Best of Huw New Year, New Music. BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens brings the goods. Here it is! The new year. New you? Well, I liked the old new, so don't worry about that. But what's more traditional in the new year than a worried look at the bank balance? A whole heap of lists with artists tipped for the top, that's what. I've started this Aritzia playlist with a great Death Cab For Cutie song, simply called “The New Year.” The lyric “So this is the New Year, and I don't feel any different,” is great, I think, and sums up this time of year nicely. The calendar has changed, and there's a (sometimes welcome) pressure to up your game, but still—you're you. As always, your music taste remains excellent, your thirst for new stuff continues, and when you hear something you love, you want to tell everyone about it. I hope you enjoy this list of “some new artists I will be digging in the coming months.” Or if you prefer, the “GONNA BE MASSIVE IN 2014” playlist! Death Cab For Cutie “The New Year” Oh Death Cab, you beautiful beast. Ben Gibbard's beautiful voice, those chiming guitars and pounding opening drums, and melodies that fit like your favourite glove make this New Year’s anthem a must. We start the looking-forward playlist with a look back, no tears in our eyes, no regrets, but full of optimism for 2014. Courtney Barnett “History Eraser” The best lyricist out there at the moment? I think so. There's something of the late Lou Reed's deadpan delivery here—a knowing and clever, but honest set of words that make Barnett's Sea of Split Peas album a must listen. Expect a lot more love for her in 2014, and rightly so. She'll probably be on Ellen and be best friends with Elton John and Jay Z by 2015. You can only hope. Chlöe Howl “Rumour” England's Chlöe Howl has been thrust into the limelight with a major label deal and already a healthy fanbase behind her. They love her for her quick-witted lyrics, a little twist and turn here and there, and some super catchy, bassy, squelchy, even downright funky music. She certainly paid her dues in 2013, gigging hard and working on her forthcoming debut album. A sober, interesting voice in a world of pop fakers. Royal Blood “Out of the Black” Brighton's Royal Blood have burst out of nowhere sounding ready to take the world on. Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher do the guitar/drums thing beautifully, their bluesy, riff-heavy rock sounding massive both live and on record. They have a knack for writing aching, soaring tunes that rise up and up and blow you away. Little Simz “The Bells” Jon Wayne, Childish Gambino, and Chance the Rapper excelled in 2013. One of the most interesting rap tracks I've heard in a while belongs to London's Little Simz. There's a confidence and a swagger, but a darkness and harshness that makes her one to watch for sure. Check her free download of her Black Canvas mixtape. George Ezra “Budapest” This man posted pictures of himself dressed as Santa throughout the Christmas period. For that, I love him. But even more so, George Ezra's voice and rhythm is just next level. He plays solo at the moment, and carries more warmth and charisma than a 10-piece band ever could, his songs touching on love and life, each one carried with a shuffling joy. This was one of my favourites of 2013, and there's more on the way. Ben Khan “Savage” You're on the dancefloor in the cluuuuuub. You're looking hawt, and you're not too drunk. You're in control. The camera zooms in slow motion, making everyone else blurry apart from you and the one you're into, and you're both in Super Sharp Focus. Everything around you goes quiet, and then “Savage” comes on. Job done. Jungle “The Heat” If Ben Khan and Jungle have their way, this year is going to be a funky one. And when it sounds this good, it's only a bonus. With “mysterious” being used to describe anyone who won't have their photo taken now, you just need to hear this to know that it's great. Brooding and seemingly effortless, it's an indicator of future cuts from this stunning band. Bryce Hackford “Another Fantasy” To get you on your way, a slice of futuristic, humble electronic greatness from this young New York producer. The album is a real treat.
