This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.Utah has a great legacy of quilting, stemming from our state’s pioneer heritage. It’s an art that’s been around for hundreds of years. Interest in quilting, along with other forms of sewing and crafts, is increasing in the United States. The Craft and Hobby Association reports that at least one project per year is crafted in about 56 percent of American households. Crafting in the U.S. is a billion dollar industry. Quilter’s Attic in Bountiful is one of the newest businesses serving this Utah legacy art.
It started with three friends, Linda Edminster, Carla Gray and Gayle Turville, who have been sewing for their whole lives with quilting as a more recent hobby. They discovered a mutual interest in opening a quilting shop, and a short time ago launched Quilter’s Attic on Orchard Drive in Bountiful.
Quilter’s Attic is a full-service quilt store with classes, fabrics and everything needed to make a quilt. Their selection also includes patterns for bags, aprons and clothing. They have the big machines to do machine quilting. Many of their fabrics are specialty fabrics in a variety of colors and patterns. Moda is one of their top lines. Linda says they carry the line of fabrics that are reproductions of days gone by when women would quilt with whatever materials were available to them.
An important focus here is education. They have a wide selection of classes for everyone from beginners to advanced quilters. One class offers a block of the month, a kit with everything you need to make a quilt block, so by the end of the year you have enough blocks for a full quilt top. Kids classes are designed to introduce the next generation to this art.
Their goal in opening a store was to create an inviting and friendly atmosphere, a place where quilters could come and browse and get inspired. Quilting creates a sense of community and camaraderie, and at Quilters Attic that comes alive, offering a place where women can explore quilting, friendships, work on projects and develop service projects for the community.
