CARMEN SOUZA DUO featuring THEO PAS’CAL Special Guest for the artwork Painter Jürgen Born Release Oct. 2011 © 2011 JAZZPILON/GALILEO Talented and inexhaustible, Luso-Cape Verdean singer/songwriter, Carmen Souza, releases a Duo CD, "London acoustic set" in November 2011, featuring Theo Pas’cal and, German painter, Jürgen Born on the CD artwork. Carmen Souza and Theo Pas'cal musical commitment have always come hand in hand with their spiritual commitment and its reflection in the way they give back to the World. In this context, this CD, released worldwide by Galileo, aims to collect funds by donating 50% of royalties to the projectS: SOS Children's Villages in Portuguese speaking countries like Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique & Guinea Bissau, ABRAÇO, an important Portuguese, 20 years old, NPO dealing with HIV issues, and a special UNICEF BRAZIL campaign for Childhood without Racism in Brazil. “Being able to help SOS Children’s Villages, ABRAÇO and UNICEF BRAZIL with this project, completes the whole vision for our purpose in making music…to give back for all our blessings” say Carmen Souza. "London acoustic set " is certainly a special way to celebrate a cycle of 10 years of continuous work with Theo Pas'cal: mentor, friend, producer, road and composition companion. Is a unique register of one of her rare concerts in Duo recorded in November 2010, at Green Note, the prestigious World Music Club in London. Also includes 2 songs recorded at the Liverpool Philharmonic hall in 2010. Nobody knows whether it was Souza who appeared in Pas’cal path or Pas’cal who appeared in Souza’s path but the results of that chance meeting has led to a powerful collaboration. Over the last 5 years we can acknowledge an intense schedule of shows, in some of the most important Jazz and World Music venues/festivals from Europe to South America, North America to Middle East, Africa and Asia. Song radio plays and a long list of concerts recorded and broadcasted by national and international TV/Radio’s in Uk, Portugal, Germany, Benelux, Italy, Canada, etc… Her performances and Cd’s have produced an impressive collection of amazing reviews and recognition from both Press and Audiences all around the world. "London acoustic set " takes us to the intimacy of the stage, feel and breathe the pure musicality of a songwriter exposing her true essence and beauty of her repertoire. This raw performance, is truly faithful to the birth of each song, putting the spotlight on Carmen Souza’s unique, expressive and captivating voice and also her complicity with the great musician and composer, Theo Pas'cal, in a journey where both are able to create their own musical language and form of expression. All the songs presented here were originally composed as a duo based on the voice, bass and guitar. Carmen Souza, plays acoustic guitar and Theo Pas'cal divides himself between the acoustic bass and percussion. "Here we go back to the beginning of our composition process where the songs appear naked but already soulful in its spirit…we felt the need to listen and play our songs in it’s first form." Carmen Souza says. Combining the influence of her Cape Verdean roots, with her other passion, jazz, this album includes 12 live new interpretations of songs previously included on her latest’s CDs: Ess ê nha Cape Verde (2005), Truth (2008), Protegid (2010). Besides the original repertoire we can find versions of "Sous le ciel de Paris" immortalized by the voice of Edith Piaf, “Sodade” and “Song for my father”. Carmen Souza writes yet another direction on the history of Cape Verdean music: her very own new Cape Verdean Singer/Songwriter style never before explored in this way, on record, by a women composer in the Cape Verdean music. Recently, Carmen Souza performed for the first time in Cape Verde offering two concerts acclaimed by national critics and the public. "The singer cloaks Cape Verdean music in new garb, this distancing herself from what is currently being done by other female Cape Verdean singers.... another path for the evolution and renovation of morna or funaná, giving them a new breadth and life.” A Semana, Cape Verde On this album, the songs come together with the fantastic work of German painter, Jürgen Born, famous for his vivid paintings of concerts. Jürgen Born created, for this project, 4 new works of Carmen Souza & Theo Pas’cal live performances, to be included in the artwork of this CD, making this musical and visual art piece complete. CARMEN SOUZA DUO featuring THEO PAS’CAL Special Guest for the artwork Painter Jürgen Born Release Jan. 2012 (C)(P) 2012 GALILEO PRESS REVIEWS: 4 STARS “Sensitive and intimate, but also very positive and overwhelming, this way of singing is an independent creative path. Sometimes in hard-driving, other times sweating in low heat, who doesn’t know her goes from surprise to ecstasy, ‘Sodade’ brushes dangerously the outrage of leaving other titles without reference.” A.L.N._JORNAL EXPRESSO_PT 4 STARS “Stripped and raw but with an intense beauty and very close to what is the way the two compose together…superb version…” A.Pires_TIME OUT LISBON_PT “”London Acoustic set” builds with a disarming simplicity a summary of the work of the duo, showing a higher dimension of their work of composition and interpretation….It’s even touching…Mandatory” Rui Dinis_A TROMPA_PT “…Has an unstoppable tone that mixes a Cape Verdean “accent” with other sounds and chords from World Music. With Theo Pas’cal-“mentor, friend, producer and fellow traveler”-has been building a unique style…after the deceased Orlando Pantera, she is the musical expression of modernity in the Cape Verdean roots. It will go far, is already on the way.”A.L.N_ JORNAL EXPRESSO_PT “Carmen Souza is difficult to categorize, but easy to like….in recent years she created her own sound: Cape Verdean roots, but riddled with various inflections of jazz and African music.” João Bonifácio_JORNAL PUBLICO_PT “Afro-cuban music, jazz, morna and references born of decades of rhythmic fusions are swallowed, distended and recycled in the development of an ecstatic authorial profile. Carmen and Theo present themselves in a raw, undisturbed, and unbreakable demonstration that regardless of the radicalism of their proposal, the lush inner beauty and exuberant objectivity is never compromised!”MBARI_PT “Fascinating…the pieces are just skin and bones, stripped back to it’s essence”FOLKER_DE “Stunning Album…”Ton Maas_CONCERTZENDER_NL “Work of incredible intensity…wonderful collection of original compositions and covers…A feast for the senses!” MELODIVA_DE “Songs with a very special energy and power, with Carmen Souza voice shining in all colours...an album which is not only a anniversary album but an album of Folk music and beautiful melodies, as well as a compilation of their music" DIGITALE JAZZ-ZEITUNG_DE “The duo electrifies the soundwaves…favorite for world jazz, Cape Verde, Portuguese, and improvisational music fans."
