Sounds Like Art - Andy Cavatorta, Gijs Gieskes, Tom Verbruggen

March 22 - May 5 Guest curator: Michel van Dartel In the vanguard of music, sound artists are always exploring new ways of creating music. Often the search will not only lead them to the new sounds they set out to find, but also to some unique instruments. Instruments which, besides being functional, can also be seen as works of visual art in their own right. Especially when they combine the aesthetics of craftsmanship with the possibilities offered by the latest in technology. Usually these works of art perform their humble services exclusively on the stage, where they can hardly be observed from up close. But in the exhibition SOUNDS LIKE ART the spotlight is not on the artists, but on the instruments they create. It has resulted in an exhibition in which we can hear and, most importantly, also see the unique interplay between form, material qualities, and technology of these new instruments. The participating artists include the American Andy Cavatorta, who created a series of harps especially for Björk, which are played using gravity, Dutch hardware hacker Gijs Gieskes who compiles the most extraordinary new synthesisers from existing electronics, and Eindhoven based musician/artist Tom Verbruggen, better known as TokTek, who creates some ingenious sound-producing sculptures. On Saturday May 4 Sounds Like Art ends with a special night of live performances by Author & Punisher, Gijs Gieskes, Pieterjan Pieters en Tom Verbruggen/TokTek.

Get inspired! Visit http://Profiles.submarinechannel.com to browse 120+ short video interviews with the world's leading creatives. Jewelry and industrial designer Gijs Bakker is considered to be one of the main pioneers of what later became known as 'dutch design'. In the sixties, together with his wife Emmy van Leersum, Bakker started a revolution. They refuted the traditional ways of transforming precious materials into decorative jewelry whilst embracing abstract forms that radically investigate the relation between body and object. Bakker has always believed in a strictly personal, autonomous approach to design, where the esthetics are far less important than the idea. In the nineties, Bakker founded a collective of young Dutch designers together with Renny Ramakers. They called it DROOG. With highly praised presentations in Milan, Droog acted as the aggregator for a highly successful new wave of Dutch Design, with followers around the world. Since the early seventies Bakker has been teaching at various academies and universities, like here for example at the famous Design Academy in Eindhoven. After he ended his activities for DROOG, Bakker started new a project called Yii, where he encourages a group of Taiwanese designers to translate their unique ideas into designs that communicate to the entire world. http://Twitter.com/submarinechannl http://Facebook.com/submarinechannel http://Pinterest.com/submarinechannl   CREDITS: Commissioning editor: Geert van de Wetering, Producer: Olivia Sophie van Leeuwen, Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix, Research: Liselotte Francken, Director: Noud Holten, Alexander Oey, Camera: Stef Tijdink, Pierre Rezus, Sound: Carla van der Meijs, Steven van Dijk, Benny Jansens, Editor: Noud Holtman, Colorcorrection: Maurik de Ridder, Music Sound Design: Jesse Koolhaas

18. LABYRINT - Gijs Van Vaerenbergh

LABYRINT - Gijs Van Vaerenbergh

Recent werk is onder andere Reading between the Lines' - het doorkijkkerkje - in Borgloon.
