The Ministry of Stories is an imaginative space and community that supports and inspires young people to write. They run innovative storytelling and writing workshops in disadvantaged areas that empower young people’s imaginations and build confidence, self-respect and communication skills. They provide a publishing platform for young writers so their voices and stories are heard. Partnering with RY and the Ministry of Stories, Mr Kaplin and creative producer One Small Pixel worked to help bring that story to life – a charming tale of a character who lives in a world full of stories and is looking for help to get their own voice heard. To make sure that this simple but universal story had wide appeal we adopted a very straight forward, stripped back, almost elemental approach to the narrative, one that reads like a fable. Brussels 'au calme': Parc Cinquentenaire

I'm happy if you like my work and embed it in your own websites as content: Please consider using Vimeo's new "Tip Jar" function by clicking on the title of this video and looking for the following icon at the bottom right of the video. Thanks! Shot in March 2010. This is a shortened re-edit. This is the third in my series of shorts entitles Brussels "au calme". The Parc Cinquentenaire was commissioned by King Leopold II in 1880 to mark the 50th anniversary of Belgium's independence. It was also built for the 1880 World Exhibition, but the main arch was not finished in time. It was finally finished in 1905 - Belgium's 75th Anniversary. The arch marks the entrance point to the city of Brussels from the eastern town of Tevuren, the Avenue now spans underneath the park and arch, despite that you hear little traffic noise in the park itself. There are two large halls also built next to the arch that now house museums. The most striking is the Bordiau hall built by architect Jules Bordiau. Technical: filmed on a 7d, with a Tokina 16-50mm f2.8 lens, glidetrack. First outing with the Tokina 16-50mm f2.8 and found getting focus and sharpness difficult even with a Z-finder. Music: "Hint of dawn" by Krista Springer, used under creative commons, courtesy of Jamendo.

COUBIAC-BREAK

// BREAK // Born from a collaboration between the photographer Laetitia Bica, the pedagogic team of the Créahm-Liège, the Mad City Rockers and the Brussels-based noise rock band Coubiac, “Break” is a multimedia artwork serving as visuals for Coubiac’s song of the same name. For almost a month the photographer and the hosts from the center have considered several scenarios, experimented with the premises, working hand in hand to offer an off the wall and colorful performance, inspired by the punk live shows from the 80’s as well as the chic aesthetic of contemporary productions. After two days of intensive shooting, the whole team was proud to present “Break” as a preview screening during the "Rencontres Internationales du Créahm". PlayerOneReady (Japan Mix) (2009)

The experimental animator Jules Engel described his process: I do not look for any kind of narrative that would lend itself to graphic expression. I must convey ideas/feelings through movements that could not be put into words. Lines, Squares, Spots, Circles, varieties of Color -- sometimes difficult to comprehend -- provide the keys to our pictures. PlayerOneReady (Japan Mix) (2009) is a retro video game music video. It uses video and sound from hacked, circuit bent or modified games, toys and custom-built A/V instruments. The main foundation of the sound and video was created using a hacked Jakks Pacific's Namco TV Games - Ms. Pac-Man Collection unit with a custom built controller. All the sounds are from performances with these instruments/devices and custom sound libraries. Special attention was paid to visual noise, glitches and digital artifacts. My goal was to make them dance and sing. Video and Music by N_DREW (Andrew Bucksbarg)

LUGUS // long arm of the light

LUGUS // long arm of the light Saturday 28th September 2013 Lugus is an on-going site-specific art project at Cody Dock, a newly discovered space on the River Lea. The old Victorian dock sits opposite the dramatic city skyline and is a fresh and exciting space for local artists and residents to get together in the midst of an industrial landscape. This footage is from 'LUGUS: Long Arm of the Light', an evening of promenade performance, sonic art and visuals around Cody Dock. Artists performed together and alone, responding to the space while responding to each other in their improvisations. There was sound, light and colour, signals and data, emitting, transmitting, responding, projecting and communicating through an array of musical and non-musical devices. Contact Light (2012)

Contact Light explores the idea of the 'man in the moon' through glitches, optical illusions and the Apollo 11 and 17 missions in 1969 and 1972, designed by Michael Betancourt. In Georges Melies' 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon," the astronomers are dressed as wizards, not scientists, putting the journey they make firmly in the realm of fantasy--and yet less than seventy years later we actually make this trip. It is possible to have seen Melies' film when it was new and to watched the 1969 moon landing as an adult. This fusion and juxtaposition of such different ideas of the moon and visiting it that gave rise to this film. This archival “remix” juxtaposes a range of historical sources and combines the ghostly music bleeding through in Reception/Transmission with plasma wave sounds and historical audio from Apollo 11. Jules Verne’s’ predictions in his novels From the Earth to the Moon (1865) and Around the Moon (1870) anticipated the real Apollo program (locating the launch facility in Florida, the time it takes to get to the Moon and that the Moon is barren, lifeless), yet Méliès overlays his film journey with fantasy, even dressing the astronomers in wizard costumes more appropriate for magicians than scientists. The shot of the face of the Moon from Le Voyage dans la Lune provided a coherent summary of these fantastic elements, one that would be instantly recognized. These recognitions of real document and historical fantasy were required for the association of fantasy::reality. In selecting footage, I focused on evoking both historical fantasy and documentary reality (Fig. 7). The Apollo missions was limited to immediately recognizable shots; the flare of the rocket engine provided a perfect bridge to Méliès’ footage. Central to these visuals was the use of static imagery: (1) a picture of lovers in the Moon from an 1890s’ metamorphic postcard--this optical illusion was the movie’s inspiration, (2) a three-minute sequence of digitized film containing scratches and punch holes that contrast with the glitched and digital character of the materials (carefully positioned to overlap with the Moon, linking it to these “errors”) and (3) material from NASA/JPL’s archives (a contemporary satellite image of the Earth; footage from Apollo 11, the first mission to land there in 1969; and Apollo 17, the last, in 1972). Scientific footage was seamlessly combined with the fourth image, a single shot from Le Voyage dans la Lune, Méliès’s iconic film: his capsule hitting the face of the Moon in the eye. Three images of the Moon--the metamorphic postcard, Méliès’s face of the Moon and NASA’s documentary footage--were continuously composited together, merging their different (yet graphically similar) depictions; I used them interchangeably for the Moon seen from the Earth. The opening shot is metonymic for this entire fantasy: Aldrin’s face merged with the Apollo rocket launching in Cape Canaveral. The optical illusion appears on screen as a lunar disk that is consumed by the rocket exhaust as the takeoff fills the screen with swirling white glitched blocks---scientific discovery banishes the fantasy, but only momentarily. The anthropomorphic character of NASA’s lunar lander becomes obvious: It resembles a giant machine-head rolling backwards on screen before descending to the surface, an example of how our historical fantasies overlay and influence our reality. This recognition structured the choices and development of Contact Light. It is the focus of my critique. “Databending” enabled the opposition of fantasy::reality via a fusion of archival materials. Compressed digital video files were altered using a hexadecimal editing program to introduce miscodings and other glitches into the file itself, creating visual “noise” and cascading visual break-up. Databending comes very close to corrupting the video completely, resulting in a total loss of imagery. When it succeeds, one image flows into the next without clear boundaries, suggesting fantasy spilling over into reality. This fluid connection visualizes the conceptual combination of lunar landing and Méliès’s fantasy. Once all the source materials were ready, they were composited using Adobe AfterEffects. Finally, I used digital frame-by-frame hand animation to make all the individual elements “fit” together perfectly, correcting minor flaws in the compositing process. In the finished Contact Light, the haze of glitches is a reminder of the uncertainty of memory and of our inherited fantasies of the Moon.

Dancing Policeman

I can't think of a much better time than now, on this cold, dark and rainy night in the city to create and share this slideshow. Sirens and activity are high and loud. There’s been a frequency, a ‘buzz’ to the city that is obvious and palpable, since the decision not to indict the officer from Staten Island. It’s surprisingly not scary but it was at first. Im never comfortable in crowds and especially chanting marching mobs. But this is New York City, not Furgerson as most New Yorkers happily and quickly share with each other. I got into my elevator with an unknown neighbor last night and she said to me, “what’s all the noise and commotion about?” I said, You don’t know? Really? Eric Garner? Michael Brown? Haven’t you followed any of this? She says, "I've been working 15 hours a day!. As the elevator door started to close I said, “You really should put on CNN”. She nodded her head. Chris Rock said yesterday that we need comedy now more than ever and I say we also need performances like this one. Performed by the amazing and lovely Jules Cazedessus with one of New York's Finest. I see this officer at the Dance Parade every year and he is and was a good sport. Hope you enjoy and please feel free to share this. - Mark Brown

The Mechanicals (2017) Extract II

Work in progress. The Mechanicals is pieced together through rehearsals of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, filmed on-site at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Throughout the play, Shakespeare confounds traditional notions of time and place as well as conscious and unconscious experiences. Significantly for me though, it is often the voice that dislocates and reformulates these longstanding conventions. Synaesthetic disturbance is adopted by Shakespeare, who in A Midsummer Night’s Dream uses the (seemingly) incompetent Mechanicals to confuse sensory language and experience. For example, when Quince the carpenter is asked about his fellow mechanical Bottom, he explains that the latter ‘to see a noise that he heard’. It is Bottom, however, who delivers the most evocative sensory distortion: ‘I see a voice,’ he claims, as he and his colleagues act out Pyramus and Thisbe, the famous play-within-a-play at the heart of Shakespeare’s work. Like Tom Snout, who literally embodies the wall in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I aim to open up spaces in the work, that operate between established oppositions; perforating the dividing walls without completely disintegrating the necessary separations of language and media. WREST: Hanging Head - Live- Sound of Arts Festival

Performed live November 19th, 2011. WREST’s newest incarnation includes Jennifer Rosenblit’s situational choreography responding to Jules Gimbrone’s musical compostions with film vignettes by Elliot Montague. Through experimental narrative, WREST explores the story of Joan of Arc as an archetypal representation of transformation. WREST depicts moments of imperative change housed within the queer body. Composer Jules Gimbrone, filmmaker Elliot Montague, and choreographer Jennifer Rosenblit create a dynamic 45-minute performance joining three artistic mediums – a live 7-piece music ensemble, projected single channel film, and live dance. Montague’s film draws on saints and mythological figures to bend reality and lead his character through internal and environmental extremities. Gimbrone’s ensemble creates a symphonic landscape through a dramatic mash of polyrhythm, grand melodic gestures, abrasive sound textures, and primordial vocalizations. Rosenblit’s choreography takes on texture and locates the body in extreme states from warrior in battle, triumph, euphoria and the failure of maintaining order. Performed live with musicians: Jules Gimbrone – Vocals, Guitar, Percussion, Violin, Noise Chihiro Shibayama – Vibraphone Ellery Royston – Electric Harp Dominique Gagne – Flute Stephen Chopek – Drums Reenat Pinchas – Cello Russell Flynn – Bass with Dancers: Jen Rosenblit Addys Gonzalez Effie Bowen Molly Leiber Caitlin Marz Julia Read Mary Read
