Curious how a musician in midst of his career is referred to with a diminutive. As it sometime occurs, and in the case of Luisito Quintero, it is to differentiate from his father, Luis Quintero also percussionist of reputable standings. But the fact that Luisito has a well domain on his career, he will always be a boy who will never cease in the pursuit of excellence and innovation regardless the years accumulated in life.
3d Element is a perfect example of that incessant search. This time around, along with some of his Venezuelan musician friends who often accompany him in the New York scene, Luisito invites some of his older peers generation as well as new upcoming musicians, all of them making an excellent job in the Venezuelan musical media, with interesting results. The songs Los Gaiteros, Otro Camino and JoroTimbal are example to understand how a new dimension of rhythmic and melodic is being opened.
But the musical swing, doesn’t just go one way, the opposite is very interesting too. Rumba in San Agustin, written by the renown producer/musician Oscar Hernandez, homage to that popular Caracas neighborhood where so many of the great drummers of the past decades come from. Contrary to Alfredo Naranjo and Luisito himself who pays tribute to the great Pat Metheny on a song which bears his name. Nor can they ignore Luisito's mambo of the Mexican Julio Jauregui, and Nequin,in which, as a great closing party we have the duet of the two Luis’ on the timbales, father and son. Therefore I have no doubt when I say that this is the most comprehensive and ambitious CD Luisito has produced so far.
If you question yourself why in a city like New York where there are so many great drummers, the Venezuelan Luisito Quintero is the first reference for all musicians, whether its Jazz or Salsa, this production will answer your question.
