'GRID' EP - Metro

A fresh year brings fresh information. There is always a sense of optimism and looking forward. And so it is that the forward thinking starts here with Metro's brand new imprint 'Ortem'. Best known for his productions via MJAZZ and Pinecone Moonshine Metro boots up his label with his EP 'Grid'. This consists of 4 tracks of uncomprimising drum and bass in a 'post Autonomic' style. 'Time Lapse' starts with a Detroit-esque cascade of sound which both draws in the listener and transfixes them before a sparse, and airy landscape is revealed. 'Impi' harks back to vocal tape loop snippets of the great minimalists and twists them into a half time glitchy stepper. The Ep's title track is vintage house keys, crackles and electricity that morph into a 'woodblock on a spaceship' driven masterpiece. The final offering is hammered home via 'Mallet'. This is post industrial loops, machine noise, clicks, rhythmic drones, washes and claps which sound like a rave in the loading bay of the space station that is the culmination of your journey courtesy of the music within. ORTEM 006 - 'Vector Files' EP - Metro

Ortem 006 is the mysteriously titled 'Vector Files'. The 'File' contains 5 tracks that are bleep inspired or touched by the hand of rave and days gone by. 'Bleep Space' launches into a trippy trajectory as it evokes a sound from early Warp and orbits off into another galaxy, pulling in space debris and appealing to alien life forms. It gathers momentum and encapsulates a Reese bass, a 2 step shuffle and a call and response from the aliens radio. The title track takes the baton and runs with it. Proceedings notch up to hyper speed as a rolling acid inspired bass line, boom bap beat, amen chops, arpeggios all fire off as the Halle Bop comet comes into view via some remote viewing. The energy created by the track could catapult a man to Venus. 'Other Side' is Hoovers and Spray cans for '17 and as paint fumes fill the room it takes over with more Strange acid rumblings, 2 steps and Graf vox. 'Atom Smasher' smashes atoms into fragments and as protons, neutrons and electrons fly around, a rasping bass weaves in between acid notes and big claps. 'Rave Stab' starts off Vampy with Mentasm hints underpinned by a solid kick drum sending you back down Jenkins Memory Lane. Big bass and Incredible bongos make a brief but infectious appearance. "This is an amazing release, the whole things pretty wild. Its like going to a rave on an upper and a downer at the same time. It's fast, it's slow, it's old and it's new. It's a very good EP that really shows something interesting and fresh for this scene, which Ortem has well and truly delivered." - Tony Justice. ✪ https://ortem.bandcamp.com/album/ortem-006-vector-files-ep ✪ https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/vector-files-ep/id1224823005 ✪ https://play.spotify.com/album/5eDvHmhiaBrS6tkrE4WCxm ✪ https://www.digital-tunes.net/releases/vector_files ✪ http://www.junodownload.com/products/metro-vector-files/3394731-02/ ✪ https://www.beatport.com/release/vector-files/2000313 plus all good digital stores ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image by BEAR Check out more of her amazing artwork. beartheartist.wixsite.com/beartheartist www.instagram.com/beartheartist www.facebook.com/Beartheartist

Control - Metro

ORTEM 002 'Scrap Metal Man' EP - Metro **Out Today** Ortem notches up its second release in the shape of the 'Scrap Metal Man' EP. Another self penned work by the man at the controls, Metro. The scene is set by the EP's title track, which is all menace and metal. Stripped back to the bone beats support drones, an eerie alarm, bass and a sense of something approaching. Plod starts with the distant echo of machinery and comes into focus via the inner workings represented by the 2 step break, over laced with vocal snippets, a nervous laugh, ethereal trains and sweeps of a ghostly subway. This works its way into layers of bass and a long forgotten sound. Every man walks a more conventional route. The two step break and off beat rolls have a warm familiar feel, but develop into shards of ice and a sinister undertone courtesy of the its rumbling held bassline. It is punctuated by vocal interludes, a rising pad and more ice shards. "Every man has to walk through hell to reach his paradise." Proceedings are bought to a close by Control, which incorporates bongos, a female vocal, and lush pads. The listener is taken on a hypnotic journey and control is totally assumed by the music. ORTEM 008 - 'Aquatic' - Momentum

Momentum surfaces with this EP release on Ortem and pushes the 170 deep envelope a bit wider. Long time engineer and sound designer, Momentum orchestrates four tracks of lush texture and percussion which place the listener at the heart of each track. Syncro opens up with pads and develops into scattered drums, shattered tones with hints of speed and movement, each in syncronicity. Spliced hints at electric drums before launching into a sparse roller with touches of feedback, light sabres, a scraper and a haunting synth line. Tension builds around a spring, a power surge and a large snare. Rapture is a spartan drum workout, which takes you on a trip through a metropolis with a feeling that something could happen at any second. It is interspersed with sounds that define its setting and illuminate the way forward. Aquatic dives down deep, and creates the essence of water. Fractured percussion creates waves music and held tones coupled with staccato rhythms create an ethereal underwater feel. https://ortem.bandcamp.com/album/ortem-008-aquatic

Jagganath - Books

ORTEM 004 'Ensō' EP - Books *Out Today* In Zen Buddhism, an Ensō (円相, "circle"?) is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. A new chapter for Ortem as the latest volume is authored by the man, Books. Taking its inspiration from meditation and creation, the title track draws on this and presents a dream like state punctuated by robot flickers and a rhythm played out on a metallic drum. There is breath and a fleeting vocal that gives way to a pitched down synth reminiscent of the halcyon days of rave, only more relaxed. Synth washes and lush pads coupled with an electronic moving bass complete the moment. Pseudo hints at rain and a swirling wind that lulls the listener with its drawn out bass, clicks and pops before revealing a dis-jointed Apache amongst fragments of a computer mainframe. The ethereal gives way to an awakening via Jagganath where a car alarm arrests slumber and heralds tribal drums in a distant valley. Electricity pulses and the rhythm steps up a gear, a door slides open and reveals shards of light, before the electronic sparseness resumes. The circle is closed by Circuit, which is the final brushstroke. Its staggering halftime beat, alien communications, bass and haunting washes evoke an edgy calm, let your mind be free. Man One - Metro

ORTEM 003 - 'Rock/Man One' - Metro *OUT TODAY* Metro shakes off his last 2 EP's and keeps things simple, getting straight to the point with Ortem's first digital 12 inch. 'Rock' kicks things off with a deep, but energetic half time outing, which is beautifully crafted and shows Metro's skill of keeping it stripped back but ever moving forward and constantly arresting. There is the essence of metal percussion and an electric guitar all curated with Metro's clicks, pops and crackles. 'Man One' is like being in a cavernous space, where a distant fire crackles and water drips. Aural washes and a lone reggae vocal swirl around the cave. The half time is marked by a bongo and the track builds into an ethereal, breathy synth line, which in turn is replaced by machinery, reverbs and rain in an eternal loop. Rock on with Man One, Metro and another deep slice of audio magic from Ortem. ✪ https://ortem.bandcamp.com/album/ortem-003-rock-man-one ✪ https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/rock-man-one-single/id1093514042 ✪ https://play.spotify.com/album/0x6QE2B6TXjciN4VcHt9Ki ✪ https://www.digital-tunes.net/releases/rock_man_one ✪ http://www.junodownload.com/products/metro-rock-man-one/3043666-02/ ✪ https://pro.beatport.com/release/rock-man-one/1734070 plus all good digital stores ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can purchase a Ltd Edition A4 print of the image used for ORTEM 003 for just £10 please follow the link below www.shirleyhollisenterprises.co.uk/store/p22/ORTEM.html Image by award winning, innovative and creative photographer Shirley Hollis www.shirleyhollisenterprises.co.uk www.facebook.com/shirleyhollisenterprises
