2. Red Owls "The Answer Is Still No"

Red Owls

No Use For A Name...I’m clueless on where to start when it comes to explaining what this band has meant to my life. When I was 15 I didn’t understand how music could be played so fast, so melodic, so aggressive, and be drenched with lyrics so meaningful yet somehow still not be the biggest thing in the world. As I grew up, I realized how lucky I was to have discovered No Use so young. To me they were the biggest band in the world and I shared this sentiment with thousands of other people. It brought us together as a community. It also introduced me to similiar artists both nationally and locally, which gave me even more of a reason to get out and play music. Of course the passing of Tony Sly was a punch right in the gut and even though I didn’t know Tony, I had been to a number of No Use shows, spent years of my life listening to his work, and even asked him awkward questions about his lyrics at a mall in New Jersey after No Use played their first acoustic show. Recording this cover was a special experience and we made the decision to keep it as true to the original as possible. Never forget Tony Sly... - RED OWLS

4. Blacklist Royals - Model Citizen

Blacklist Royals - Model Citizen

Blacklist Royals have always been a band on their own trajectory - considered noteworthy, notorious, or nothing but a footnote. The real story however, is found within the pages of drummer Rob Rufus’ national book award winning memoir, Die Young With Me, which took the literary world by storm in 2016 and is now being developed into a major motion picture. “It took five years to write the book, and I’d sent out over 300 manuscripts,” says Rob. “I was getting advice like, ‘Just make it an Ebook, because no one is going to touch this thing.’ At the same time, Blacklist Royals had just been through the major label ringer - the day I got my book deal, I’d actually received an Email from the president of our label, kicking BLR to the curb. It was truly an a new low… and then the phone rings. It just goes to show you, even the losers get lucky sometimes.” Blacklist Royals returned to Paper & Plastick, who released their debut album, for their latest offering - Model Citizen. “We recorded these songs over a year and a half ago, in the midst of all that drama, and they got caught up in the red tape. To finally have them come out, and be back where it all began, is liberating. It’s good to be home.”
