2. Waiting For The Miracle (Leonard Cohen)

Waiting For The Miracle (Leonard Cohen)

Words and music by Leonard Cohen. I woke up ill at 5am and played this into the phone's built-in recorder. Baby, I've been waiting I've been waiting night and day I didn't see the time I waited half my life away There were lots of invitations and I know you sent me some but I was waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come I know you really loved me but, you see, my hands were tied I know it must have hurt you it must have hurt your pride to have to stand beneath my window with your bugle and your drum and me I'm up there waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come Ah I don't believe you'd like it You wouldn't like it here There ain't no entertainment and the judgments are severe The Maestro says it's Mozart but it sounds like bubble gum when you're waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come Waiting for the miracle There's nothing left to do I haven't been this happy since the end of World War II Nothing left to do when you know that you've been taken Nothing left to do when you're begging for a crumb Nothing left to do when you've got to go on waiting waiting for the miracle to come I dreamed about you, baby It was just the other night Most of you was naked Ah but some of you was light The sands of time were falling from your fingers and your thumb and you were waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come Ah baby, let's get married we've been alone too long Let's be alone together Let's see if we're that strong Yeah let's do something crazy something absolutely wrong while we're waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come When you've fallen on the highway and you're lying in the rain and they ask you how you're doing of course you'll say you can't complain -- If you're squeezed for information, that's when you've got to play it dumb: You just say you're out there waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come

13. Samantha Newark "Waiting For The Miracle" Leonard Cohen Rehearsal 2006

Samantha Newark

For you Leonard Cohen fans - In late 2006 I auditioned to be a back up singer for Leonard Cohen's up coming world tour and promptly started rehearsal with our MD, incredible multi instrumentalist Julian Coryell at the helm, Samantha May and My self (The two Sam's as we were coined) as his back up singers and the line up also included Dorian Cheah and Jeremy Toback. It was the same time the documentary "I'm your man" was in theaters ( I would highly recommend a watch)We rehearsed at a rehearsal space in North Hollywood and waited weeks and weeks patiently for Leonard to come from Montreal Canada and finally sit in with us. The day came and we all made our way to a small recording studio in Down town Los Angeles where Leonard had apparently done many recordings and we rehearsed with Mr Leonard Cohen himself who was so lovely and quite cheeky. Everything was recorded but I've never had the pleasure of hearing that days work. We didn't even take a photo with him, I wanted to but didn't want to be the cheezzball that wanted a selfie but it would have been pretty epic to have. He told us that he hadn't performed his own songs in about 15 years and could Sam and I share our sheet music with him. Sadly after all that work and anticipation of getting to sing his beautiful music around the world he decided to pull the plug on the tour for about 3 years after the big bombing in London apparently freaked him out. We as a band all moved on to other projects and I actually ended up moving to Nashville right after this happened. I just discovered a rehearsal CD we made from the board with Julian sitting in for Leonard. Leonard and Leonards engineer Bob said we sounded just like the record and that Sam and I were world class singers, beautiful compliment coming from THE MAN. Thank you Leonard for an incredible experience regardless!!
