A modern re-imagining of the classic Weather Report track by the cream of jazz players on Soundcloud Guitars Benny Sutton @bennysutton UK Bass Barry Likumahuwa @barry-likumahuwa Indonesia Drums Alan "Quorn" Corne @quorns-drumming-world Austrailia Clarinets Michel Martineau @michel-martineau Canada Birdland was written by keyboardist Joe Zawinul of Weather Report. The piece made its debut on Weather Report’s 1977 studio album, Heavy Weather. Benny Sutton says... "You know the original was recorded in the studio in one take! Our version took a bit longer than that. The musicians come from all around the World and have never met! We swapped our parts and backing tracks over the Soundcloud platform taking six months in total to complete" "Birdland" served as a tribute to the New York jazz club of that name on 52nd street NYC Joe Zawinul once said "I met Miles there, and Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong; I met my wife Maxine there" Benny says.. "Thank you all the musicians who created this track - and thanks to Joe, Wayne, and Jaco for giving us Birdland. Weather Report never had a guitarist. I hope that, if they had, it would sound like this!"

3. Thriller ---- Michael Jackson

Thriller ---- Michael Jackson

Thriller is an interesting rework. The melody line hasn't got a lot of notes to it - yet works instrumentally. Like many MJ tracks it relies on an insistent and repetitive muted guitar part to drive it along. Thriller is the title track from the 1982 album of the same name. This album was the follow up to the 1979 Off the Wall album and firmly established MJ a a megastar. The video accompanying this track also broke new ground by being shot with cinematic values - which also made it the most expensive video ever (at that time). People forget its importance. MTV was in it's infancy and by getting heavy rotation 'broke' the crossover R&B/rock style to a wider audience.

Jimi meets Miles --- If 6 was 9 (downloadable)

This is what it might have sounded like had Jimi survived to play with Miles Davis during Miles' Tutu/Amandla period (1986). For the first time Miles could embrace synthesizers, sequencing, and drum machines. No doubt Jimi would have too. Add to that a producer who could play bass every bit as well as he could produce, Marcus Miller, and you have a recipe for some awesome music. On this track I play guitars and sequence Miles trumpet. I am ably assisted by the immensely talented Steve Shone https://soundcloud.com/palmgrease on bass. Don't miss his bass solo at 3 minutes in, Marcus would be proud!

HEY! LIKE THIS? Then why not visit www.bennysutton.com to hear and download many more great sounds like this? Here's my smooth jazz guitar version of Human Nature off the Thriller album by Michael Jackson. It was written and composed by Steve Porcaro and John Bettis, and the MJ version was produced by Quincy Jones. Personally I love the Miles Davis version the best but then he is the Main Man! There's a little muted trumpet in there for Miles, see if you can spot it

18. Rock with You ---- Michael Jackson (downloadable)

Rock with You ---- Michael Jackson (downloadable)

"Rock with You" is one of those MJ tracks with loads of happy memories for me. It was written by a guy just up the road from me, British songwriter Rod Temperton, formerly of the group Heatwave. It was the second single from Michael Jackson's fifth album, Off the Wall. Many of us consider the Off The Wall album as MJ's first proper album. It came out of nowhere to give him megastar status. It was perhaps the beginning of the end for MJ; he looked human when this was released but his appearance and behavior only declined from there onwards. It reached number one on both the pop and R&B singles charts. According to Billboard, the song was the fourth biggest single of 1980.
