The Red Balloon - Trailer

Dear Vimeo Friends, Many of you have been wondering what I've been up to lately; so I decided to put together this short trailer. If I got it right it should give you guys a pretty good idea of what I've been doing this past few months. My good friend Bob Lorrimer deserves most of the credit here for his patience and guidance. While this is just a very short step in a new direction, I hope you can still appreciate the work a project like this demands. As always your comments, suggestions and feedback are welcomed. Best regards, Felipe

Camera/Edit: Paul Hamilton Music: "A Teenage Romance," by Dorena Canon 7D, 50mm EF, 17-85mm EF, Zacuto Z-Finder This is an example of landscape footage shot in June 2011, in Mendocino, California, as part of a project for the LandscapeHD television channel in the UK. They presented this beautiful piece of music by the Swedish band "Dorena." It was challenging to shoot long clips, and then change positions very quickly, frame, level, expose, and shoot again. These were the requirements: movement in every frame, no people, long steady exposures, and crossfades between clips. The result is dreamy and relaxing. If you are in the UK watch SKY203 between 5:30am-11am daily! Many thanks to my inspired Vimeo friends: Caleb Vinson, Syl Renaud, Felipe Rojas & Bob Lorrimer. Your artistry and enLIGHTenment inspired me to make this short film.

4. Calgary Nights Under The Winter Lights

Calgary Nights Under The Winter Lights

My very first humble and very amateur video try on vimeo. Nothing artistic, just random shots by -13 the first night and -23 the second one in Calgary downtown neighborhood within 5ish mn walk from my place in Nov 20th & 21st 2010 from 9 pm to midnight. Last shot was from my balcony at 2:20 am lol. Testing out and getting the feel in low light of my new GH1 20mm pancake lens hacked "C settings" (Thanks tester13-ptool's genius:). No tripod used, hence the shakiness/out of focus. Sorry, but it was too bad out there to keep the camera still I was freezing:S. Indeed, the result is not there yet, still a lot to learn playing with the settings/workflow to get the best out of this little tiny body yet with a great potential. Feel free mindful eyes to grab my attention to any aliasing, artifacts, moire, mud, milky lights, detail loss, dropped frames, ghosting, banding, exposure, framing, focusing issues...or any other problems. Any fix with be more than appreciated. Gear used: Panasonic Lumix Gh1 hacked(Gh13) "C settings" Panasonic pancake 20mm 1.7 lens shot all manual (saturation at 0, everything else at -2), ISO 100~400. Custom WB. AVCHD, Nostalgic film mode, Shots at 1080p 24 fps and some at 720p 60 fps Sandisk 8gb class 10 SDHC card Converted to .avi using Cineform neo scene HD + removed 2-3, 3-2 pulldown (not sure if it's needed lol) Imported & Edited in a 1920x1080 24 fps time line template using Sony Vegas pro with a hint of contrast & saturation enhancement in couple shots. Disabled Resample on all shots. Deinterlace method "Interpolate fields". Tried to edit the AVCHD files directly in CS4, didn't work well. My slow dual core 2GHz 4gb Ram laptop couldn't handle it. Looking forward for an i7, 12 gb Ram, 2gb crossfire graphic card along with a 27" full HD high contrast LCD monitor :D along with a faster lens 1.4, 1.2 or even 0.95 X_X ($000) Exported as sony avc, .mp4 file. Audio: 192 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 32 Bit, Stereo, AAC Video: profile (High, 24 fps, 1920x1080 Progressive, YUV, 768 Kbps. Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000 Useful links: Part 1 GH13 hack Gh1 basic settings part1 feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL Panasonic G1/GH1 Getting Started: Part 1 - Setup How to set your GH1 up for video Exporting with Vegas for Vimeo HD Compression Guidelines Being Cinematic by PerroneFord Filmmaking Techniques All kind of goodies/adapters for micro 4/3. Until our dream ( indie film enthusiasts to put a hold on a Red camera if any soon lol with a 7k cinema-scope high end beautiful glass (Zeiss-Voigtlander) let's hope for the best and take the red pill and break the matrix/Hollywood haha. Special thanks for the whole community ( Tester13,lpowell, Mattin, eyepatchentertainmen..etc), the vimeo hd (Gh1) community for their inspiration, sharing & support just to name a few (Phillips Bloom, Gunther Machu, TheFilmArtist, Mateo Perez, Julian Davies, Bob Lorrimer, James T. 5. Close-ups - a HFMC practical exercise

Close-ups - a HFMC practical exercise

The Huddersfield Film Makers Club meets up regularly for practical nights, where we shoot a collection of shots, or even a brief sequence, on a given theme. In June we went out and about to find interesting objects to shoot in close-up -- and a way of revealing what those objects were. A zoom lens was very handy, and Bob Lorrimer was a willing prop. A small insect also makes a brief appearance. Using a tripod for long-zoom close-up shots is almost always necessary, but in this case I just about got away with shooting handheld -- albeit using a good quality stabilised lens. Le Tableau

Earlier this Summer my good friend and mentor Bob Lorrimer acquired an original painting from Veronika Benoni 'The Old Town Square - Prague.' She hails from the Czech Republic, and her artwork has been exhibited around the world; her unique colors and touches of gold and silver leaf initiated a series of exchanges that inspired us both to make this film, which was by the way originally intended to be just a proof of concept, and a reference for a future film.
