Cellar Sessions: Jaye Bartell - It Was A Very Good Year October 4th, 2017 City Winery New York

Jaye Bartell sits down for a One On One Session at City Winery New York on October 4th, 2017. Watch the full session here: https://youtu.be/KoTxhTUIdv8 For more info visit: https://www.jayebartell.com Audio & Video by: Ehud Lazin Setlist: Slow Going So Kind It Was A Very Good Year (Ervin Drake) Born in Massachusetts, Jaye Bartell moved to Asheville, NC, in the early 2000s where he began playing music among friends as a parallel activity to his work with poetry and other writing. Writing was his main focus for most of a decade; a time that involved constant traveling and moving around the U.S., mostly between North Carolina and the Pacific NW, where he lived on a small island in northern Washington. After moving to Buffalo, NY, in 2006, he found the company of the writers and musicians of House Press, a publishing collective made up of friends from Buffalo and Chicago that produced small-edition handmade books and home-recorded albums. He released his first album, Feeling Better, Pilgrim, in 2008, after musician/writer Damian Weber taught him how to record. The album incorporated live incidental sounds (wind, chimes, traffic, birds), some of which were manipulated and processed as loops, but emphasized vocal melody and lyrics above all. A typical performance from this time included guitar and voice accompanied by a portable turntable that played field recordings of bird song, ocean waves, wind and other incidental sounds. He moved back to Asheville in 2009 and recorded The Dog's Dinner, which departed from the solo, self-production of his earlier work, and initiated the collaboration among Bartell and other area musicians, especially guitarist and composer Shane Parish of Ahleuchatistas. He collaborated with a number of visual artists in Asheville as well, including Ursula Gullow and Nathanael Roney, who have illustrated a number of Bartell's albums and continue to influence his songwriting. Bartell continued to write, record, and perform intensively in Asheville for the next few years with Parish and other musicians, although most of the recorded output came from live performances. The years 2012 and 2013 saw the releases of Elation, an EP recorded with J Seger, and Loyalty, a full-band record featuring Parish, Seger, and Emily Easterly, followed by a 2014 UK tour with like-minded troubadour, Angel Olsen. Bartell’s move to Brooklyn, NY, in 2013, as well as the work of Spalding Gray and Eileen Myles, heavily influence the content presented on his latest record, Light Enough. In his own words, “Resettlement is an implicit theme in much of the writing, and the process of making the album was an act of resettlement: finding out where I lived as a means of coming to live there.” The record as a whole takes as a kind of informal credo a line from Eileen Myles’ Chelsea Girls: “I have waited all my life for permission. I feel it growing in my breast. A war is storming and it is behind me and I am moving my forces into light.

For more info visit: https://brookpridemore.bandcamp.com Audio & Video by: Ehud Lazin Setlist: I Can't Change The Cupcake Empire Guitar Bomb Brook Pridemore (born in 1979 in Detroit, Michigan, United States) is a New York City-based songwriter, performer, and frontman, whose early work is affiliated with the antifolk movement. They released five albums on the Bronx-based record label Crafty Records, and was responsible for co-producing the much acclaimed Anticomp Folkilation album which has since become an underground cult classic. A regular contributor to numerous other compilations, Brook Pridemore shared a split 7-inch with Ghost Mice for Plan-It-X Records. According to the music review blog Earbuddy.net their highly anticipated sixth album “Gory Details,” was released in late 2014. It includes the singles “Listening to TPM,” featuring Joseph Michelini of New Jersey indie/folk rock act River City Extension, and "Celestial Heaven". "Celestial Heaven" was recently picked up by Reug Vision, Inc / World Live Music & Distribution and debuted on VEVO in June 2013. Following the release of the record, Pridemore began touring consistently as well as playing in and around New York City near monthly. Having lived in Kalamazoo, MI for years doing backyard shows and working dead-end jobs to pay for musical endeavors, Brook was known to sing about the things friends did, or that they saw while hanging out downtown, just for something to do. BP has toured the United States numerous times and embarked on their first European tour in the fall of 2009.[1] Due to experience playing many house shows on tour, Pridemore and their roommates were inspired to turn his own apartment into a performing venue for local antifolk acts and touring bands; they titled it the Brooklyn Tea Party.[2] January 2010 saw the commencement of the Multinational Perspiration Tour, an undertaking on which Pridemore, with tandem partners including The Hit and Miss Engines, Doug Cote, Liv Carrow, Crazy and the Brains and Father, Son and Holy Smokes, performed across the US, Canada, and various European countries before the tour ended in New York on June 19, 2010. From 2010-14, Pridemore lay low in their adopted hometown of Brooklyn, NY. A fifth album, Brook Pridemore's Gory Details, the self-described "album about sex," was recorded in summer 2011. The album remained unreleased until July 2015. On November 11, 2011 Pridemore played a ninety minute solo set at New York's Sidewalk Cafe. The set included songs from all Brook Pridemore albums, and was released on cassette under the title, My Name Is Brook Pridemore, And I Live In Brooklyn, NY. This live album also marked the incorporation of Pridemore's own record label, Brook Pridemore Industries.

Cellar Sessions: The Elwins - This Is It October 20th, 2017 City Winery New York

The Elwins sit down for a One On One Session at City Winery New York on October 20th, 2017. Watch the full session here: https://youtu.be/DFMH8UhwElU For more info visit: http://www.theelwins.com Audio & Video by: Ehud Lazin Setlist: This Is It Grind You Down If 2012’s And I Thank You got The Elwins’ metaphorical foot in the door, then their latest long-player, 2015’s Play For Keeps, is the boys blasting it wide open. And then having a party. Even before dropping And I Thank You, their full-length debut, The Elwins – vocalist/guitarist Matthew Sweeney, drummer Travis Stokl, guitarist/keyboardist Feurd, and bassist Frankie Figliomeni – were one of Toronto’s much-hyped hopefuls to fly the upbeat indie pop flag forward. Since its release, they’ve done the rounds at the major festivals, performed alongside some of the world’s biggest bands like The National and St. Vincent, and been trumpeted by media and industry tastemakers as a (sometimes the) band to keep an eye on. To those that listened, Play For Keeps is what you were watching for. The 12-song collection builds atop the foundation of fun pop music they established with its predecessor. “We tried to take everything up to the next level, sonically speaking,” says Feurd. “We wanted to be really open and try a bunch of things we hadn’t done before.” Taking the best bits of pop and rock music from the past five decades (despite the guys having only been alive for a little over two), The Elwins have delivered a dose of dancy bliss that appeals to virtually anyone. “We definitely like making songs that make people want to move,” Sweeney says – and move they will. Cuts like “You Have Me” and opener “Bubble” are brilliantly endearing blasts of ‘60s-inspired pop not far removed from the band’s earlier efforts. But meanwhile, lead single “So Down Low” laces some ‘70s garage swagger and extra grit into their signature sound. “Bringing Out The Shoulders” borrows from the best of ‘80s synth pop, and “It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over” could be a Katy Perry cover. It’s not, but it could be. It’s a broad range of influence, but effortlessly blended and easily identifiable as The Elwins. The guys credit producer Derek Hoffmann with putting a welcome modern pop sheen on the record. Meanwhile, mixing came courtesy of the dynamic duo that is Gus van Go and Werner F (Hollerado, Said The Whale). “In a way, we didn’t want to feel like we had to tie anything to the last record,” Sweeney says of their progression. “We wanted to do whatever we were feeling good about.” One could say “feeling good” is at the very core of what The Elwins are all about, and nowhere is that more apparent than a live show, where the electric exchange of energy blurs the line between band and audience – sometimes sweaty, usually lively, always fun. With a packed 2015 touring schedule set to take them across the continent and over to Asia and Europe, where they’ve had major success on three separate tours supporting And I Thank You, fans will have plenty of opportunity to join the party. But while the music and performances never take themselves too seriously, the same can’t be said for the band itself. “We’re very passionate about this, and we have lofty goals for this album” Sweeney says. “For us, this is our job. We’re about pushing ourselves as hard as we can to reach our goals.” As of now, that goal is to have Play For Keeps reach as many ears as possible; fortunately, the music is so magnetic, so immediately inviting, that it won’t be much of a challenge. The work gets done by day, but come quitting time, The Elwins send out an open invitation to let loose and have fun. Take them up on it.
