Tabea Martin - Duet for Two Dancers (trailer)

‘Duet for Two Dancers’ takes a look at the anxiety of not living up to your own expectations, or those which your profession or society in general impose on you. A look at the fear of losing yourself. And at what remains when all skills disappear. The freedom to choose different professions and identities is often a reason for insecurity and doubt. The overload of choices creates a kind of stagnation. The inability to choose forces the body to rest. In that way ‘Duet for Two Dancers’ poses questions about ‘being a dancer’ as well as ‘not being a dancer’. Choreography / Concept : Tabea Martin Production: Dansateliers & Conny Janssen Danst Dancers: Winston Arnon, Martijn Kappers/ Ryan Djojokarso, Stefan Baier Music: Igor Stravinsky Photography: Leo van Velzen Thanks to: Amy Gale, Conny Janssen, Matthias Mooij, Pol Bierhoff Video: Paul Sixta Contact: [email protected]

Replay - Kay Patru

This solo is an attempt to create a character through the dissociative manipulation of sound, movement, and clothes. I took sound material out of its original context, mixed it and replayed it within the frame of my choreographic content to see what would happen. I was curious to see if a character could emerge out of unrelated materials. And if so, who would he be? Kay Patru (FR) is originally trained in classical ballet and contemporary dance techniques. Following his training he worked with several international dance companies in Canada and the Netherlands such as Netherlands Dance Theater 2, Grands Ballet Canadiens, Ballet jazz Montreal. In 2001 he joined the image and sound department at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, Netherlands, where he studied visual arts for 2 years. Since 2003 he has been working as a freelance performer in Europe in the field of contemporary dance and physical theater. In 2009 he formed an artistic collaboration with Jihae Ko named Delicate Unit in which they both investigate the medium of performance and visual art practice. Music: Samples of movie soundtracks and youtube recordings including: Hunger/(S.Mcqueen) and 37°2 le matin /(J.J Beineix) This performance was part of Dansateliers' One Night's Dance 2010 Fifteen new makers in dialogue – with each other, with dance, with an audience. Dansateliers wants to get to know makers by collaborating in the studio. Every year fifteen new makers are invited to participate in a series of workshops, exchange feedback and create dance sketches for presentation in the studio or the theater. In One Night’s Dance you will see the latest developments in dance, ideas about what dance might be, and experience a broad range of temperaments. Video registration Paul Sixta

10. Vessel - Promo Trailer

Vessel - Promo Trailer

Vessel A work in development By Connor Schumacher together with Joris van Oosterwijk. Made for Dansateliers in Rotterdam. Premiering March 14th, 2013 in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg. ___ Is the presence of god, in effect, a psychological state? Connor explores this in a work divided into chapters. Letting go the forms of past and future, they examine the effect that the present moment has on both performer and viewer. The first chapter, Vessel, was created for the One Night's Dance program. Joris van Oosterwijk, a theatermaker and visual artist, was the subject of the first part of this work. Through this collaboration they work with a concentration that takes place in stillness and precision. The result is a work that does not attach itself to a specific visual language, allowing for a diverse number of mediums that maintain a constant awareness of the now. Connor and Joris will go back into the studios of Dansateliers in March to expand the concept into new chapters.

HAND TO HAND | Roser Lopez Espinosa for Conny Janssen Danst. Dutch Tour 2015. Coproduction by Dansateliers (Rotterdam).

HAND TO HAND is a particular ballet in the form of a judo combat. The ways to gentleness are subtle, with their own tactics and cadence. Hand in hand, two dancers. See fair play in a delimited space. Precise and delicate, they compose a couple dance. Hand to hand, a movement like a caress. "In Hand to hand judo and dance are intertwined. A beautiful and pure piece of dance." Mirjam van der Linden, de Volkskrant "The doubt lingers on for a while: are these typical judo moves or are there maybe a little too many twists, turns, long pauses and gazes too intense? As soon as Tchaikovsky starts to play the ultimate ballet music, the game officially turns into drama, filled with fervent embraces and vertiginous lifts." Love-ism: Pawel & Lenka

Choreographer Mor Shani is working on “Love-ism”. Love-ism is a long term study inspired by the book “Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm. In this study Shani wishes to challenge the perception and liquidity of the agreed upon, the sublime and the condemned. He asks: “when do supreme ideas about love like care, mutuality and dependency stop being sacred and become sinful? And what is it that distinguishes one kind of love from another?” Video artist, Paul Sixta expands the conceptual grounds of Love-ism in close collaboration with Shani. He challenges the discussion by making the process of creation transparent, and is creating a film about the "Politics of Intimacy", researching the human experience of meeting significant others in and out of the studio. The stage product and the film will be presented as one piece. video still: Ewa Szymczyk

DANCE - Loïc Perela “What makes you feel alive? What is dance for you? What do we use dance for? If we get away from styles and codes, isn’t dance a great way to be in touch with our bodies and soul…? What is dance if not an experience? Can it contribute to make us feel alive?” Loïc Perela was selected by Dansateliers to participate in DANSLOKAAL 1 by Conny Janssen Danst. For DANSLOKAAL 1 he developed DANCE where he and his dancers researched questions like the above. This led them to explore different approaches for the body to generate life. Perela wants to demonstrate that dance is a tool of expression and to find a way to celebrate the body and let the soul travel. Jessica van Rueschen - Us (excerpts)

"I would like to dedicate these two weeks of research on working on the Art of Performance.
I will concentrate on the commitment one is making while performing. Human need, on all levels of our existence, initiate our actions.
In this image I translated humans’ need of: ‘giving meaning’ to our life into the physical image of ‘getting up (again)’ or ‘trying again’. The absurdity of human’s existence is displayed in our attempt to live a life full of meaning and purpose in an indifferent universe. We create meaning in spite of objective meaninglessness. I would like to create physical ‘paintings’, to expose on public locations for a period of time. Within these paintings I strive to strip the situation from unnecessary form and translate the essence of the need we have. This image is a first try-out and after defining it more, should be seen over a period of at least one hour." Video: Paul Sixta

LOVE-ISM (15 second promo)

Love-ism is a long term study inspired by the book “The Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm. He takes a closer look at the human experience of intimacy, challenging the perception and liquidity of the agreed upon, the sublime and the condemned. For Love-ism Shani collaborates closely with video-artist Paul Sixta. They seek for that particular moment when supreme ideas about love like care, mutuality and dependency stop being sacred and become sinful, and they wonder what it is that distin- guishes one kind of love from another. Shani works with professionals on a series of duets in various constellations. Parallel to this process he organ- ises open workshops to be able to dialogue and interact with a community of non-professionals (kids and adults) and feed the creative process. The material, encounters and interviews resulting from the workshops find a way into the eventual artwork. Paul Sixta captures the several steps of the whole process in film. love-ism as a whole will be presented in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg. Spectators will have a rich experience by going on a blind date and witnessing the series of duets, films and encounters that assemble into an epic event. Mor Shani (Israel, 1985) graduated in 2009 from the choreography department of ArtEZ School of Dance. Shani’s work is presented across Europe and has won several inter- national awards. Since 2010, Shani has been working as resident choreographer at Dansateliers Rotterdam, where he iss coached and supported in the search for his signature as an artist. In this context he created the pieces Flatland, gravity and grace and caliber (i.c.w. Conny Janssen Danst). As of 2013 he is guest artist in ICKamsterdam. Guest artists are selected (young) artists who are guided and coached by ICKamsterdam. Paul Sixta works as a freelance filmmaker and photographer. His films and video-installations were shown on festivals and museums worldwide and won several prizes.
