Blu & Exile - Constellations (feat. Lyric Jones)

Pre-order here: smarturl.it/BluExile 10 years after Blu and Exile released their magnum opus Below the Heavens, the California duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. In the Beginning: Before the Heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems – the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. Their third collaboration follows 2012’s Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, and is slated for an October release. In The Beginning: Before the Heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of Blu and Exile’s creativity at the time. The album has guest appearances from familiar names like Dr. Oop, Donel Smokes, Aloe Blacc, and Blame One. While “Soul Provider,” “Another Day,” and “Party of Two” appeared on Blu’s Lifted EP, the majority of these songs showcase Blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status (“Constellations”), getting radio play (“On the Radio”), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world (“You’re Gonna Die Someday”). Exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and DJ scratches. In addition to releasing In The Beginning: Before the Heavens for their fans, Blu and Exile are continuing their celebration of Below the Heavens with a West Coast anniversary tour. After such a huge turnout for the duo’s Below the Heavens anniversary show at the Regent Theatre in L.A. in July, they decided to take the live experience on the road with Dag Savage, Choosey, and Cashus King.

Fat Beats Records is proud to present Baker’s Dozen, an exclusive vinyl series that shines a light on the best minds of instrumental hip-hop, ambient, and electronic music. Each installment gives one artist carte blanche to capture their signature sound. Volume One highlights Los Angeles born / Sacramento based beat maker Dibiase, whose style is best described in his own words: “It’s crazy to think that my equipment collection and beat making process started back in high school with just an 8 second Gemini sampler and a Sony Walkman. It was a super basic set up. Back then I used whatever I could get my hands on. Finding different samples, looping them up, running the layers back through the Walkman. Adding more layers and repeating that process until I had a beat. It worked. My process is a lot different now but in some ways it’s the same. I still do a lot of layering. I use a combination of hardware and software. Sometimes I start with a sample. Sometime I start with drums. It depends on my mood and the genre. Sometime I use a kit. Other times I will sample and layer drums, run them through another piece of equipment like the SP-12 or 404 to dirty them up, then dump them back into Ableton. I really don’t have a set way of doing things musically. I like to experiment with different technics and styles. I like my music to have a certain sound. Most of the time I let the process happen naturally.”

J Dilla - Rebirth Is Necessary (Instrumental)

From J Dilla's "Rebirth Of Detroit Instrumentals" on Ruff Draft Records. Available on 2xLP April 23rd. Pre-order: http://tinyurl.com/c6exz4p Following the success of 2012’s posthumous Rebirth of Detroit CD, the official estate of J Dilla is proud to present Rebirth of Detroit Instrumentals. The new album distills Rebirth of Detroit’s 21 tracks to a lean 12 beats, never before pressed to vinyl, spanning Dilla’s career from Slum Village to Donuts. Containing only carefully sequenced, cherry-picked tracks that span over a decade of work, Rebirth of Detroit Instrumentals serves both as a comprehensive overview of Dilla’s style and as a testament to its profound influence on contemporary producers. The double LP, packaged with entirely new artwork, offers a rare insight into the mind of an artist who has come to define not only Motor City rap but the entirety of hip-hop from the 90’s to today.

Fat Beats Records is proud to present Baker’s Dozen, an exclusive vinyl series that shines a light on the best minds of instrumental hiphop, ambient, and electronic music. Each installment gives one artist carte blanche to capture their signature sound. Every volume’s 500-unit, strictly limited vinyl pressing features one artist and twelve tracks, but only 250 units will contain the thirteenth track -- the eponymous “baker’s dozen bonus” -- on a flexi disc. The LPs also come equipped with a 5x7” postcard insert that features a photo of the artist’s workspace along with the equipment used in their music-making process. Visually cohesive and packaged with the utmost attention to detail, Baker’s Dozen is a series that speaks up for artists whose craft renders voices superfluous, whose instrumentals alone suffice to make a statement.
