4. SoundWorks Collection: The Sound of Gravity

SoundWorks Collection: The Sound of Gravity

In this exclusive SoundWorks Collection profile we talk with Director Alfonso Cuarón and Re-recording Mixer Skip Lievsay about the sound teams work to create a dramatic sound scape to a dark and vast outer space environment. Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) and George Clooney (“Syriana”) star in “Gravity,” a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. The film was directed by Oscar® nominee Alfonso Cuarón (“Children of Men”). Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. “Gravity” was written by Alfonso Cuarón & Jonás Cuarón, and produced by Alfonso Cuarón and David Heyman (the “Harry Potter” films). Chris deFaria, Nikki Penny and Stephen Jones served as executive producers. The behind-the-scenes team includes multiple Oscar®-nominated director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki (“Children of Men,” “The New World”); production designer Andy Nicholson (art director “Alice in Wonderland”); editors Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger (VFX editor “Children of Men”); and costume designer Jany Temime (the “Harry Potter” films). The visual effects were handled by Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Tim Webber (“The Dark Knight”). The music was composed by Steven Price (“Attack the Block”). Project Name : Son Mektup Plot Summary Set during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915, the story of “Son Mektup” follows a young Turkish pilot and a nurse who together rescue and attempt to shelter a young orphan boy amidst the chaos of battle. A total of budgeted 462 VFX shots (excluding online cleanup jobs) were executed and finalised. 95 of the VFX shots were totally CG with no actual footage. About 150 online cleanup shots were finalised. In this project, my main responsibility was creating all fluid simulations. I've done fluid simulations for all battleship smokes, cannon fires and explosions. When fluid simulations were done, I've started to composite CG Shots in Nuke to help the team. Let’s face it, election season can be a divisive time in our great nation. But not this year when Spike TV decided to run a candidate everyone can stand behind. Jon Taffer! The SPILLT team had the pleasure of collaborating with Spike to produce a mock political campaign for promoting one of their top shows, Bar Rescue. With a solid script provided by the creative team at Spike, SPILLT concepted the visual creative and established a unique design that allowed for humor, while still maintaining the look of a polished real political ad. After a whirlwind one day shoot in Denver, our team tackled editorial, color correction, 2D/3D animation and compositing in less than three weeks time. This campaign of a :60 and three :20 promos, was Spike’s most successful branded promo to date with almost 200K views in the first day. Our team had an amazing time and we hope you enjoy. The 716Th - Official Prime Video Trailer

THE 716TH is a wildly fun, sci fi adventure about two insubordinate non-automated combat medics Doc (Andrew Bowen) and Asher (John Asher) who concoct a risky, unauthorized, at time comical plan to rescue a pair of injured soldiers left behind on an alien planet. A rescue that sends four unlikely heroes on a wild ride none of them expected! World premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, THE 716TH is a hugely entertaining sci fi adventure from writer/director Andrew Bowen. Made on a shoestring budget, the film is the result of the two years Bowen and his team dedicated to bringing this sci-fi universe life. Featuring endearing characters, laugh-out-loud moments, a sweeping score by George Shaw and impressive VFX, THE 716TH marks a noteworthy debut from Bowen and the talented artists who helped him bring this exciting new science-fiction universe to life.

12. The Oregon Files

The Oregon Files

In the last part of September and first week of October 2008, I Produced a little 6 day shoot with enough in the budget to jump off a building, blowup boats (with CGI) rent the Port of Long Beach to shoot in, have 2 electric prototype cars (Cobra and Shelby Mustang) rent two huge docks with warehouses, build 4 amazing sets on a sound stage, build a moon pool, surface a sub, sink a sub, have a kidnapping, rescue a diver, hold a ready room below decks inside a CGI aquarium, shoot at copters above the surface, shoot at boats on the surface, explode charges in the water as the boats went by and have the proverbial money exchange scene. We shot on the new RED camera x 3 and had 4 for the heavy stunts. The camera captures digital images in 4K (big) files. There is a CGI freighter (The Oregon) and explosions and matted out breakwaters and for example we shot a guy jumping off a building and we still wanted the building to look like it was in a generic area. We wanted the boats to be on the high seas instead of Long Beach harbor. We did not really want to blow up the chopper so we did it with CGI. It was the kind of hard work that you enjoy and can’t get enough of. The crew was the best and all did a great job. The cast was excellent. We had hoped that this would get the job done - to raise the money to produce a TV series based on Clive Cussler’s novels The Oregon Files. It was a demo for the Sultan who had expressed an interest in funding a Clive Cussler series. Scott Ross Directed and Joe Murray (DP) shot it. Daniel Tibbets Executive Produced. Tom Milo was Line Producer. Drew Heriot - great editor! Jonathan Southard was the 1st AD. Script by Rudy Liden. William Mesa did the VFX at Flash Film Works. The crew was the best. The whole team was exceptional.

Argon Alien Covenant Previs Reel

After Prometheus and The Martian, our third opportunity to work with director Ridley Scott was on Alien Covenant. Working closely with Ridley and VFX Supervisor Charley Henley, we created previs for the 3 big creature fights in the movie, Med Bay, Lifter Rescue and Terraformer Bay fight, helping to find the pace and shape of the scenes. Our expert creature animation team also developed the Baby Morph, Neo morph and Xenomorph creature designs during our animation process. As we animated the creatures, we would adjust their anatomy and design based on Ridley & Charley's feedback. We would quickly rebuild and rig the creatures to enable us to adjust their locomotion and finalise the designs before shooting began. This is a sample of the previs shots against the final film.
