14. OKC Thunder vs Dallas Mavericks 13 JAN 2016 NBA

OKC Thunder vs Dallas Mavericks 13 JAN 2016 NBA

OKLAHOMA CITY -- In this first half of the season, Oklahoma City is starting to make something pretty clear. No matter who the Thunder are playing, they never have a lead that is safe. Facing an undermanned Dallas Mavericks squad, the Thunder watched a 29-point fourth-quarter lead whittled down to 14 before finally pulling away for a 108-89 victory Wednesday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. "It was a difficult game for everybody," Thunder center Enes Kanter said. "I think we kept our focus. We were really good in the first half and second half on both ends. They rested their guys, but like I always say, we can't worry about what they're doing. We can only focus on what we do on the court and play basketball." Forward Kevin Durant scored 29 points to lead Oklahoma City. He shot 9 of 14 from the field to go with 10 rebounds and four assists. Forward Serge Ibaka added 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Thunder improved to 28-12. Playing without all five starters, the Mavericks were paced by guard J.J. Barea, who had 18 points and six assists. Guard Raymond Felton added 14 points on 3 of 11 shooting as the Mavs fell to 22-18. But Dallas coach Rick Carlisle liked the way his team competed under difficult circumstances, especially Barea. "It's a physical game, it's emotional, both teams competed," Carlisle said. "(Barea) is a walking breathing, stubborn, competitor. That's why he's been a really terrific 10-year player. He's not going to back down. The bigger the moment, the bigger the challenge, the more he is going to rise to it. I think we have a team of competitors." It took a couple of minutes for Oklahoma City to get itself interested when the night started. Without Dallas having its normal cast of rivals on the court for Durant, Ibaka and guard Russell Westbrook to focus on, they came out with a lackluster look. But the mismatches quickly started to become apparent. Felton was forced to defend Durant, who scored 11 points in the opening quarter. The Mavericks had no players to turn to in order to change the tide. Barea tried to provide the needed offense and keep the contest close. However, midway through the second quarter, Barea got tangled up with Westbrook and started a shoving match between the two teams and several technical fouls were issued. "It was a regular foul, then (Westbrook) threw his arm, and then it went a little crazy after that," Barea said. "I was there. I wasn't backing down. He started pushing, I started grabbing, he grabbed me." The altercation just seemed to motivate Durant, who then hit a pair of 3-pointers and threw down a dunk on rookie forward Justin Anderson. The Barea-Westbrook feud flared up again late in the first half and Westbrook was hit with his second technical foul and ejected from game. However, the Thunder still led 65-42 at halftime. "That's how Barea is. He's a chippy player," Durant said. "I mean, he has to be that way. He's the smallest guy in the league, one of the toughest guys in the league as well. So we knew he was going to try and add a little something to the game, but we did a good job keeping our heads." With guard Devin Harris injuring his foot and forward Charlie Villanueva being ejected with two technicals, Dallas was down to eight players in the second half. Even without Westbrook to keep Oklahoma City's offense humming, they were still too much for the shorthanded Mavs. "We got it down by 29 and got it back to 12 or 14 and they had to bring their starters back in," Carlisle said. "You have got to just keep playing and they did and I am proud of the way that our guys competed." NOTES: After the Mavericks played an overtime game against Cleveland on Tuesday, coach Rick Carlisle decided to sit F Dirk Nowitzki, G Deron Williams, F Chandler Parsons and G Wes Matthews on Wednesday at Oklahoma City. "It's hard," Carlisle said. "There are a set of circumstances that I knew coming into the season that I knew were going to be significant. In back-to-back situations, where there are big minutes, we were going to be talking about whether certain guys should play." ... Thunder coach Billy Donovan was not happy with the team's defense during a three-game road trip. "I think we need to be more consistent on the defensive end of the floor," Donovan said. "I think the two areas that consistency probably needs to get better is transition defense and our ability to keep people off the backboard." ... After a series of late-game meltdowns this season, Thunder F Kevin Durant said he's going to reverse his trend of waiting until the fourth quarter to increase his offensive activity.

The 53-19 Oklahoma City Thunder will hit the road when they face the 25-45 Minnesota Timberwolves in an NBA pro basketball game on Friday night. Tip time from Minnesota is scheduled for 8PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by the NBA League Pass Channel. The NBA pro basketball odds from this game has the road team Oklahoma City Thunder favored by -7 ½ points with an over under line of 203 ½ points. There has been no line movement since the odds were released a few hours ago. This will be the fourth meeting of the season between OKC and Minnesota with each team winning and covering the spread in their home court. Two games were played in Oklahoma City and one was held in Minnesota. Oklahoma City has a road record of 21-14 on the year. The Thunder wins their third straight and sixth in eight games after a 103-80 home victory against the Washington Wizards as a -14 ½ point betting favorite. The game landed under 198 points. It was a big second half for the Thunder as they outscore the Wizards 50-35 at the half. They shot 46% from the floor and made 8 of their 14 three pointers. OKC held Washington to just 32.1% shooting as well as 5 of 20 from three point distance. Russell Westbrook led Oklahoma City with 21 points and four assists making 5 of his 8 shots and 10 of his 11 free throws. OKC is a top five offense in all five key categories which are field goal, three point and free throw shooting as well as points per game. On defense the team surrenders 42.6% shooting to opponents good for second in the league in defensive field goal percentage. Oklahoma City trails San Antonio for the top spot in the Western conference by 1 ½ games with 10 games remaining. The Timberwolves are 16-18 playing on their home court. They come off the 120-117 home defeat on Wednesday to the LA Lakers as a +4 ½ point underdog. The game finished over 205 ½ points. Minnesota connected on 46.4% from the floor and made 5 of 17 of their three pointers. They forced 21 Lakers turnovers and fail to win because the Timberwolves gave up 43.7% shooting and 10 of 22 from three to Los Angeles. Nikola Pekovic led the team with 19 points and 16 rebounds in a losing effort. With Pekovic and Chase Budinger healthy and back with the Timberwolves we have seen an upsurge offensively as the team has averaged 109 points a game. Minnesota all season has struggled from three as the team ranks 30th and last in the NBA by making 29.9% from beyond the arc.

[Newsa] Nate Thurmond, Warriors Center and Defensive Wall, Dies at 74

By RICHARD GOLDSTEIN July 16, 2016 Nate Thurmond, the Hall of Fame center for the Golden State Warriors who became one of the National Basketball Association’s most dominant defensive players and rebounders while battling some of the leading big men in league history, died on Saturday in San Francisco. He was 74. The cause was leukemia, his wife, Marci, said. Thurmond, who was named one of the N.B.A.’s 50 greatest players in 1996 when it celebrated its 50th anniversary, played mostly for the Warriors in the 1960s and ’70s. He averaged 15 points a game, displaying a fine outside shooting touch, along with 15 rebounds. He played 11 seasons for the San Francisco and Golden State Warriors and his final three seasons with the Chicago Bulls and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was a seven-time All-Star and was selected for the N.B.A.’s first or second all-defensive team five times. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., in 1985. Thurmond, at 6 feet 11 inches, vied with the likes of Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Willis Reed and Wilt Chamberlain, his onetime teammate. “The toughest center for me to play against is Nate Thurmond,” Abdul-Jabbar once remarked. “He played with unbelievable intensity and was simply a man among boys on most nights, especially on the defensive end,” Jerry West, the Hall of Fame guard for the Los Angeles Lakers and a member of the Warriors’ executive board, said in a statement posted on Saturday on the team’s website. LeBron James, Thurmond’s fellow Akron, Ohio, native, wrote on Twitter: “Knowing u played in the same rec league as me growing up gave me hope of making it out! Thanks!” Thurmond became the first player to record an official quadruple-double when he made his debut with the Bulls, scoring 22 points along with 14 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 blocks against the Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 18, 1974. In November 1965, he hauled down 42 rebounds against the Detroit Pistons, the best single-game rebounding effort of his career. He had set an N.B.A. one-quarter rebounding record with 18 against the Baltimore Bullets that February. The Warriors retired Thurmond’s No. 42, and the Cavaliers also retired the No. 42 jersey he wore with them. He persevered through operations on both of his knees, and he was often overshadowed by the other brilliant centers of his time. “I’m just not a tricky basketball player,” he once told Sport magazine. “Being flashy takes unnecessary effort. Once I got cute and tore up a leg muscle that kept me off the court for four weeks. I suppose I could make a reputation for myself by dunking the ball and other stuff. But what would it get me?” Nathaniel Thurmond was born on July 25, 1941, and played high school basketball in Akron. He spent three seasons playing for Bowling Green, averaging 17.8 points and 17 rebounds over his college career, and he received all-American mention as a senior. Thurmond was selected by the Warriors as the third overall pick in the 1963 N.B.A. draft and was named to the league’s all-rookie team in his first season, when he played at power forward, alongside Chamberlain. He emerged as a star after Chamberlain was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers during the 1964-65 season. Thurmond’s Warriors went to the N.B.A. finals twice, losing to the Boston Celtics in 1964 and to the 76ers in 1967, when the Warriors were also led by the scoring of Rick Barry. Thurmond was traded to the Bulls before the 1974-75 season and was dealt by them to the Cavaliers early in the next season. He helped take the Cavaliers to a berth in the 1976 Eastern Conference finals, in what became known as their “miracle” season, but they were ousted by the Celtics. Thurmond retired after the 1976-77 season with 14,437 points and 14,464 rebounds. In addition to his wife, Thurmond is survived by a son, Adam, from a previous relationship. Thurmond was a longtime community relations ambassador for the Warriors and had owned a barbecue restaurant in San Francisco, where he lived. “Night in and night out you can depend on him doing his job,” his Warriors teammate Walt Hazzard was quoted by NBA.com as having said. “His statistics aren’t overwhelming, but his presence on the court is unbelievable. As for blocking shots, I’ve seen guys get offensive rebounds and then go back 15 feet to make sure they can get a shot off. They know Nate is there.” During the Cavaliers’ 1976 playoff series against the Celtics, Thurmond told The New York Times: “I’m not near the player on offense that I once was, I can’t jump as high. But on defense, I’ve still got a lot left. My instincts and my experience help make up for my age. “And,” he added, “blocking shots still turns me on. I wish they were counting blocked shots in my big years. They started keeping track of them too late for me.” Thurmond was capable of ruining many an evening for the big man he was facing. ...

Miami Heat vs Oklahoma City Thunder - Full Highlights - November 7, 2016 - 2016-17 NBA Season

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Even without another scoring outburst from Russell Westbrook, the Oklahoma City Thunder easily handled Miami. Westbrook had just 14 points -- 19 below his season average entering the game -- but the Thunder still beat the Heat 97-85 on Monday night. Enes Kanter had 24 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 10 of 12 in 21 minutes off the bench. Victor OIadipo scored 17 and rookie Domantas Sabonis had a season-high 15 points to go with 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City. Westbrook finished with 11 assists, and his control of the action helped the Thunder build a 22-point lead after three quarters. He didn't play in the fourth. "He's always looking for his teammates," Kanter said. "He's looking to score, but he knows that he's going to get double-teamed, triple-teamed. They cannot guard him. There's no one guy in the league that can guard him 1-on-1. He's making himself better, and he's making everybody else better on the team." Oklahoma City improved to 6-1, the best seven-game start for the franchise since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008. Miami's Hassan Whiteside, who entered averaging 20 points and 14.2 rebounds, finished with five points on 1-for-9 shooting and 12 rebounds. Westbrook said Thunder center Steven Adams played well against Whiteside. "Steven did a good job of buckling down, using his size, using his ability to be able to use his body and his strength to match," Westbrook said. James Johnson led the Heat with 18 points. Miami shot just 36.9 percent from the field. "You have to give them credit defensively," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They've shown this year they're long, they're athletic, they make multiple efforts." The Thunder led 55-47 at halftime, despite Westbrook's 2-for-10 shooting. The Heat chopped their deficit down to four before Westbrook went off. He converted a three-point play, a mid-range jumper and a 3-pointer to spark a 20-0 run that put the game out of reach. "He's a great player, so he's going to have his fingerprints on the game one way or another," Spoelstra said. "It's a matter of time, and you have to find a way as competitors to overcome all of that, and we didn't."

Golden St Warriors versus Oklahoma City Thunder Pick Prediction NBA Pro Basketball Lines Odds Preview 4-11-2013

The 57-21 Oklahoma City Thunder will travel to play the 45-33 Golden St Warriors in an NBA pro basketball game on Thursday night. Tip off time from Golden St is scheduled for 10:30PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by the NBA League Pass Channel. The pro basketball odds from this NBA game has the road team Oklahoma City Thunder favored by -4 points with an over under line of 204 ½ points. There has been no line movement in this game since the odds came out a few hours ago. The Thunder and Warriors have met three times this season with each team winning and covering the point spread in their home game. Oklahoma City has a road mark of 24-15 on the current campaign. They bounce back from a home loss to the Knicks with a 90-80 road victory on Tuesday to the Utah Jazz as a -3 point betting favorite. The total landed under 198 ½ points. OKC held the Jazz to just 35 first half points in victory. They survived a 39.5% shooting game with 9 of 21 coming from three point distance. The Thunder held the Jazz to 39.2% from the floor and only 7 of 25 three pointers. OKC wins because they pulled down three more boards and forced 17 Utah turnovers. Russell Westbrook led the team with 25 points and five rebounds as he made 8 of his 21 shots. In the playoff race the Thunder is ½ game behind the San Antonio Spurs for best record in the Western conference with four games remaining. Oklahoma City is in the top three in the NBA in all four key offensive categories. On defense the Thunder is second best in the league by allowing opponents shoot 42.5% from the field. The Warriors are 27-12 straight up on their home court. They win their fourth game in five tries after a 105-89 home victory on Tuesday to the Minnesota Timberwolves as a -7 point betting favorite. The total landed under 204 points. It was a good second half for the Warriors as they outscore Minnesota 50-35 in victory. They shot 42.9% from the field and made 10 of 24 from three. Golden St held the Timberwolves to 36.7% shooting and crushed Minnesota on the glass by a 60-44 margin. Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 30 points and three boards as he made 10 of his 19 shots. The team is in the sixth seed in the Western conference which means they can avoid San Antonio or Oklahoma City in the first round of the playoffs. They hold a one game lead over the Houston Rockets with four games remaining. The Warriors put up some good offense numbers this season including being the number one three point shooting team in the league. Golden St is a top five team in the NBA in both field goal and three point defense this year.

[Newsa] Russell Westbrook's big second half helps Thunder strike first blow

2:28 AM ET OAKLAND, Calif. -- Even when the clock showed all zeroes and the final score read 108-102 , it still didn't seem like the Oklahoma City Thunder actually walked into Oracle Arena and took Game 1 of the Western Conference finals from the Golden State Warriors . The Warriors led for much of the game, including by as many as 14, but the Thunder stayed in it just enough to merit a belief that Kevin Durant or Russell Westbrook could win it for them. And it was Durant, who went 2-of-11 in the fourth quarter and had missed five consecutive shots before rocking Andre Iguodala and drilling a 15-footer to put the Thunder up five with 30.1 seconds left. It wasn't a vintage, prototypical Durant performance -- 26 points on 10-of-30 shooting -- but it was in one regard: When the Thunder needed a bucket, Durant got it for them. Russell Westbrook scored 24 of his 27 points in the second half of the Thunder's Game 1 win over the Warriors. Christian Petersen/Getty Images Durant and Westbrook are the backbone of the Thunder, with everything riding or dying on how they perform. But again, as has been the case for much of this postseason, Steven Adams was large -- literally and metaphorically -- with 16 points and 12 rebounds in 37 minutes. His interior defense and physicality has taken the Thunder to another level, but on Monday, he canned six straight free throws, including two clutch ones with a minute left to put OKC up three. What's stunning about the way the Thunder took this game is that it feels like they didn't even play that well. They missed 10 free throws. Durant and Westbrook shot a combined 17-of-51. But riding a suddenly ferocious defense, they took away the Warriors' half-court offense and baited them into hurried, contested 3s. When those shots are dropping, the Warriors are relentless, and unbeatable. When they're not, they're vulnerable. "Lot of quick shots," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "Way too many quick shots." Kevin Durant scored 26 points and made a key 17-foot jumper with 30.7 seconds left, and the Thunder handed the Warriors their first home loss of the playoffs with a 108-102 victory in Game 1 of the West finals. Warriors topped by resilient OKC » Box score » Game highlights » Fan reaction » Game HQ » 2016 NBA Playoffs coverage » What sparked the Thunder was a second-half eruption from Westbrook. The fiery Thunder guard had only three points on 1-of-8 shooting in the first half, but had 24 of his 27 in the second. Saying Westbrook was in "attack mode" is an insult to the definition, because his determination was on full display. He harassed Stephen Curry as much as one can hope to, and his gambling paid off with seven steals. He didn't neglect his playmaking, racking up 12 assists, and really sparked the Thunder offense in a variety of ways. Where the Thunder made up the most ground might be simplified by two numbers: 10 and 2. In the first half, the Thunder turned the ball over 10 times, many unforced and silly. In the second, they had just two giveaways. Turnovers have been an area of concern all season and in some cases OKC has won in spite of them, but removing offensive possessions from the Thunder does two bad things for them: (1) it takes away a chance for Durant or Westbrook or one of their other very good offensive players to attempt a shot and (2) it removes the opportunity for the best rebounding team in basketball to get it back should they miss. The Thunder have now won three straight road playoff games, which includes back-to-back wins in San Antonio and now one at the vaunted Oracle. Every team on the road to begin a series is looking for a split, just trying to get that elusive one. The Thunder have that. And now they can hunt for more.

Utah Jazz versus Oklahoma City Thunder Pick Prediction NBA Pro Basketball Odds Preview 2-12-2013

The 39-12 Oklahoma City Thunder will travel to play the 28-24 Utah Jazz in an NBA pro basketball game on Tuesday night. Tip time from Utah is scheduled for 9PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by the NBA League Pass Channel. The NBA odds from this contest has the road team Oklahoma City Thunder favored by -4 ½ points with an over under line of 200 ½ points. There has been a ½ point move on Utah as the Thunder opened as a -5 point favorite. The teams went head to head back on November 30th and it was Oklahoma City with the 106-94 home win against the Jazz as a -9 ½ point betting favorite. The total came in at under 201 points. Oklahoma City is 16-9 on the road this season. They earn their fourth straight win following a 97-69 road win on Sunday to the Phoenix Suns as a -8 ½ point betting favorite. The total came in at under 205 points. OKC takes the 17 point lead at the half in the win. They connect on 44.7% from the floor along with 9 of 17 from three. Russell Westbrook had 24 points and 6 assists on 8 of 15 shooting. They held the Suns to just 33% shooting along with 4 of 14 from three. The Thunder forced 23 Phoenix turnovers. Oklahoma City is a top three offense in four major categories. Just as impressive the Thunder is the number two defensive field goal defending team this year by giving up 42.9% from the floor. The Jazz are 19-6 on their home court. The Jazz lose their second straight after a 120-109 road defeat on Saturday night to the Sacramento Kings as a +1 point underdog. The total came in at over 195 points. Utah hits on 48.8% shooting and connects on just 4 of 15 from the three point line. They lose by committing 18 turnovers and allowing 51.8% from the field to the Kings. Alec Burks came off the bench for 24 points on 7 of 15 shooting for a Jazz team that was on the back end of a back to back playing a well-rested Sacramento team. Defensively the Jazz has struggled as they are a bottom third team in the NBA in field goal and three point defense. They allow 45.9%s shooting along with 37.8% from three and that’s not good against an offensively strong Thunder team.
