5. Snow in Mexico - Juno Beach

Snow in Mexico - Juno Beach

Juno Beach is the third release by Italian duo Snow In Mexico, and their most ambitious to date. Dreamy, washed out landscapes have been replaced by granular vibes that ebb and flow with the beat. Andrea Novelli and Massimiliano Cruciani craft visions of simulated paradise, blinding neon lights, and 80’s cyberpunk aesthetic with warm, vintage sounds of the legendary Roland Juno. Snow In Mexico constructs an EP that dips into the uncanny valley, blurring the line that separates analog shores from the vast digital ocean.

8. Presents For Sally - Wishawaytoday

Presents For Sally - Wishawaytoday

Presents for Sally return with ‘Wishawaytoday’, possibly their most accessible and poppiest song to date. The title track oozes the confidence and swagger of a band on top of their game and promises great things for the forthcoming LP ‘Colours & Changes’. The UK band have always blended their influences effortlessly which range from anything from late 80’s/early 90s UK and US indie bands to dance music and classic hip hop which has always made reviewers struggle to pin down the bands sound.

11. Presents for Sally - Wishawaytoday

Presents for Sally - Wishawaytoday

“Colours & Changes” is the 2nd album from the UK band Presents for Sally. Formed in 2009, the three piece has taken in many influences and managed to form a sound all of their own. If the debut album showed promise of what the band could do, then “Colours & Changes” has set it in stone. The ten songs form a musical journey that takes you down several roads that all meet and make perfect sense in the end. At times melodic and beautiful, and others pure white noise with lots of delayed, detuned guitars sandwiched in between. “Colours & Changes” takes on a life of its own. Each song seems to grow into something spectacular and produces many goosebump-filled moments but also shows a band full of confidence in what they are doing and what they set out to achieve. Having achieved RadioOne and XFM airplay in the UK with previous singles, there seems to be no reason why this album will not only match that but push the band even further.

15. SEASURFER / Into Dust

SEASURFER / Into Dust

Falling in love for the first time in your teens is always scary. I fell in love with my best friend, and when it’s unrequited love during the day and a secret at night, one can literally go mad. It’s like falling in love in darkness. You become a vampire. Sleeping the day away to be near your lover in a parallel universe in your head. Moving to New York City in the mid 90´s saved my life. I discovered the queer scene, only to find out that I was not crazy, lost myself in the vast variety of music, running from one small indie record store to another. I became a music collector and made mix tapes for my friends in NYC and Germany. Years later, when I returned to Germany and first heard Dirk´s songs, I was immediately pulled back in time, and I fell in love with his powerful, beautiful wall of sound. All my vocal ideas for his demos shot right out of the deepest part of myself. Love, fear, demons, teen-angst, lust, and the universe. Singer Apolonia about her lyrics for Seasurfer´s EP Vampires. Making music is like a drug you get hooked on. When songs come together like a picture, then happiness is pure...and the four songs of this EP make me happy. SEASURFER is like an adventure, a trip where new musicians keep coming on board and others disembarking, so that the journey continues. This EP, with my new Hamburg-based singer Apolonia, has the voice that I've been looking for for years: Ethereal, shimmering yet strong, hook lines that get stuck. It`s cool hanging out with her, and she hopefully will stay for a long time. Also, the driving bass play of my old buddy, Steven Burrows, which I admired for the English Band AND ALSO THE TREES, gives SEASURFER a new, strong kick. Dirk Knight about Seasurfer

17. SWOONE - This Bullet Never Kills

SWOONE - This Bullet Never Kills

Finally, the eagerly awaited debut album from the darkly sophisticated London duo, Swoone. This is an album, brimming with quality, depth and heart breaking beauty. Siobhan Demare, who's sensual and exquisite vocals, have been in demand by the likes of guitar legend, Robin Guthrie and 90's chart toppers Mono, finally break free to create a breathtaking album of pure class. Here Siobhan is more in control, more expressive and in the finest song writing form of her career. Fans of her sultry delivery will also be mesmerised by her stunning melodies and poignant lyrics. Her beautiful voice conveys such intimacy it vividly populates a gorgeously rich and cinematic aural landscape. The music is deeply emotional and genuinely felt, not because composer Gary Bruce knows how to write and play this kind of music, indeed, the opposite is true, he has no musical training or knowledge. His keyboard has the notes written on them pencil and he slowly develops guitar chords from scratch! Instead of using musical theory Gary painstakingly creates a musical landscape navigated by feelings alone. It is this probing of the heart that produces music that is refreshingly genuine and instantly arresting. Every song is a film in miniature, from a classic thriller, to David Lynch to european cinema. Think Portishead's homage to John Barry with touch of 60's soul and eno-esque colour. Every track is different, suprisingly so, with all the influences two eclectic souls have haunting their psyches. Ideas that have been fermenting for two lifetimes have matured into something sweet and rich. Diverse influences include 90's trip hop, The Carpenters, Billy Holiday, dub, The Ronettes, shoegaze, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Chris Isaac, Donny Hathaway, Al Green and Pink Floyd! There is no following fashion here, just the love of feeling music deeply. Intriguing, yes it is. Can you hear these influences? Yes you can! And with such influences this is an album to cherish, an album that reveals more layers with each listen, an indie classic. Wallow in the sultry vocals, heartfelt words, cavernous guitars, swelling strings and super cool beats. Just listen to to each perfect song to know that each one is a jewel, original and unique in its own right. Shine on Swoone!

19. Echodrone - When The Two Ends Meet

Echodrone - When The Two Ends Meet

Echodrone’s 2015 release, Five, heralds a sea change for the band in many ways. Musically, Five arrives at a destination first set by founding members Eugene Suh and Brandon Dudley, mixing reverb-drenched guitars with glitchy electronics and dreampop vocals to create a coherent mélange of tracks aimed to satisfy aficionados of shoegaze and IDM alike. Five also represents the next phase of Echodrone, realized fully only with the influences and songwriting input of new members Mike Funk, Jim Hrabak and Rachel Lopez. Throughout Five, Echodrone explores the sounds of transitions. From arranging evocative melodies into unique pop song arrangements to applying standard rock band formats into 21st century workflows, Five takes everything Echodrone cares about musically and carries it into new territory. Five is an auditory journey that mirrors the life of five individuals coming together virtually to create the fifth album of Echodrone. It is the cathartic soundtrack that maps the human experience through their eyes, as the quintet transitions from old jobs to new jobs, old friendships to new friendships, and old loves to new ones. To the band, Five is the perfect blend of shoegaze and electronic elements. They hope it is for you as well.
