YOLO'ing on the Eastern Frontier
A few months ago Keith Malloy invited myself, Chris Burkard, Foster Huntington, Trevor Gordon, Dane Gudauskas and Ben Weiland on a mission to find surf in Russia's far East. With rickety ex-military air and land transport our fearless guide Sergei lead us on a two-week romp through the wilderness. Because of him and our cook and translator Yelena, we pulled giant salmon out of rivermouths, work up to Grizzly tracks outside of our tents, gathered an assortment of arctic berries and shredded the clean beach breaks.
This upcoming short film is a tribute to Sergei and his manly ways.
Keep an eye out for release of the short film on www.Korduroy.tv around Christmas.
Sergei Urusevsky will be remembered as one of the most innovative and resourceful figures in the history of cinematography, a proponent of a filmmaking in which a subjective camera narrates the film. Urusevsky said: "It has never interested me, as cameraman, to just register what is going on in front of the camera." His goal had always been to "make the image very active." His interest in cinematic form found its adequate expression only after he began working with director Mikhail Kalatozov.
Sergei Polunin, the youngest-ever principal ballet dancer for the Royal Ballet, reflects on his early trials and triumphs in a touching portrait directed by Jem Goulding.

I couldn't resist. I love "Take me to Church" by Hozier. I love the video by David LaChapelle. And Sergei Polunin's dancing is breathtaking and a fist to the heart. But something was...not exactly missing but...not as optimal? Thematically.
So...for fun I set it to Sia's "Chandelier" (with just a few minor changes - repeated some of the song at the end to make it match the length). Nothing else was tweaked, changed, etc. And the result...in some ways I like more (I think the song/lyrics match his energy more, especially given his history and battles with various physical and substance issues)
I find it amazing how the same dance/dancer/energy can reflect something completely different if set to differing music
